God’s Word is extremely important in our personal lives. It reminds us to keep our focus on Yeshua. If we start focusing too much on ourselves, thoughts can soon spiral out of control. I remember a situation many years ago when I couldn’t see past my inward focus. I knew the Lord was asking me to perform a task that I really didn’t want to do. I was literally throwing a fit, explaining to the Lord why I shouldn’t perform the task He asked of me (and for which I should have been honored to perform). I was so distraught and had such a strong focus on “me” and “my” desires that the Lord had to audibly turn my attention around.
To date, I have heard the Lord speak to me in an audible voice only one time. Unfortunately, it was not to commend my behavior. I am humbled to note that much to my chagrin, Yeshua needed to remind me that every request He makes of me is not necessarily for my immediate personal benefit. Four forcefully uttered words were thundered by God, “It’s not about you!” That statement immediately stopped me in my tracks. It was an important enough message that the Lord had to audibly chastise me to gain my attention.
Thankfully, God turns ashes to beauty. Although the four audible words were uttered forcibly enough to let me know how unequivocally important it was that I engage in a particular task, those words will forever remain treasured in my heart. Holy Spirit continuously reminds me of those four words—not in chastisement, but rather as comfort and guidance. Those words have become words I live by; they are appropriate in innumerable situations.
I mention this embarrassing incident to help you better understand that we are blessed in order to be a blessing to others. Every single person was created by God to fulfill His divine purpose. Sometimes that purpose will require you to perform tasks that you prefer to forego but nevertheless are critical for you to fulfill. You may have been created for the very purpose which you prefer to forego.
Although God can speak audibly to you, it is rare. Learn from my mistake. If God does choose to speak audibly to you, pray that it is to commend you, not correct you!
